Remedial Classes

Our Senior Teacher, Susan Long runs classes for people with health problems (see classes page for details).

In these classes individuals are given advice and guidance on what and how to work in yoga to help overcome a health problem or to alleviate symptoms caused by physical, physiological and emotional diseases. A vast range of health problems can be helped through the practice Iyengar Yoga. For example muscle, bone and joint problems, back pain, rheumatism and arthritis. It helps organic problems, heart and lungs, asthma, COPD, endocrine problems over and under active thyroid, diabetes, as well as kidney problems, womens health related issues, prostate problems, MS, ME, stress, depression and anxiety, digestive and urinary conditions, and a host of other problems.

The format of a therapy class is different from regular beginner and general level Iyengar Yoga classes. Participants are given individual advice and practical help with postures (asanas), relaxation and breathing (pranayama).

“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.” B.K.S. Iyengar

Treatment of conditions

B.K.S. Iyengar achieved a high level of success in the treatment of a wide range of conditions and passed on some of his experience to Senior level teachers. Appropriately qualified and experienced teachers are awarded therapy status by the Iyengar Yoga (UK) Therapy Committee. IY(UK) maintains a list of Iyengar Yoga teachers who are registered to take therapy classes. You can check if any teacher has this status on the IY(UK) website www.iyengaryoga. org.uk

These classes are for people whose health problems are too severe for them to attend a general class or who need equipment that is not available in general classes.
