IYCE SILVER JUBILEE

25 YEARS OF IYCE 1995 - 2020

Susan wrote to Guruji in 1995 telling him that there was a nucleus of teachers in Essex who were interested in working together and setting up a yoga group to focus on teaching and learning Iyengar Yoga in Essex. Guruji replied,

“Dear Susan Long,

I received your letter of 1.11.95 just now. I am happy to know that you are all meeting and planning to have an Iyengar Yoga Centre in Essex. As long as my method of teaching is maintained with sustenance I am glad to lend my name…..I wish you all the best in your endurs. Yours sincerely B.K.S. Iyengar.”

Following Guruji’s reply the small group of teachers and students set up the Iyengar Yoga Centre for Essex (IYCE) to help improve the practice of Iyengar Yoga in Essex. During the early years activities included providing information about Iyengar yoga classes in Essex to members of the public, organising workshops and yoga days, and publishing a newsletter, IYCE News. One of the major activities was to train more teachers to work in Essex. The initial teacher training course was run by Jayne Orton, from Iyengar Yoga Birmingham, and subsequent courses by Susan Long.  Since 1995 some 20 teachers have been trained and qualified.
